Mon 14.09 at 19:00

@ Põhjala tehas, Marati 5, 11713, Tallinn
Schedule:

At 18:00 pm / Opening of the EKA product design exhibition Spectrum (hangars)

At 18:30 pm / Product design award BRUNO exhibition opening (hangars)

At 19:00 pm /  Reet Aus // Out of Fashion - Completely opening show   (hangars)

The stage is occupied by the punk band Saint Cheatersburg, surrounded by fashion that spits on our understanding of what’s conventional. The choking voices of global capitalism, the isolation of human life, the space stolen from one’s neighbours and billions of used jeans are floating in our mental consciousness leaving agonizing complaints behind. Where lies the beauty in all of this?

The variations of Saint Cheatersburg’s sound work “Neighbours” drifts uncannily through both our physical and mental dimensions. We think we originate from there, but where we don’t belong. Exposing itself in the form of an animal, environment, fellow human being. The variations of our neighbours. Unknown to us in an unexplored environment, getting as excited as we don’t give a fuck.

The animal is a human to a human and the human is a human to an animal. The environment is the place of birth and decay of our jeans.

Performance as a prelude for awakening.

Illuminated by the glow of enlightenment, we have grown to believe that we are the crown of nature, thinking that we know it all and that the universe desperately needs us to form a moral ground for it to feel upon, just like the jeans need water. It’s a fantasy. A delusion. It is time to wake up from this dream, to face the complete loneliness, the isolation and sneeze. Like a bunch of gypsies, we stand on the edge of the unknown world, that is deaf to their music, cares for their hopelessness as little as their suffering and their jeans.

Ready, steady, zip up!

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN SCHOOLS' EXHIBITION

The festival's theme "Design for Need" questions the life cycle of today's product. Is the new generation of designers, the first agents in any production cycle, equipped to navigate the waters of a society replete with challenges and regulations? In response, a collection of student projects are presented by Estonian Academy of Arts, Tartu Art College Pallas, Tallinn University Haapsalu College, Tartu Art School. The floor additionally extends to representatives from Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and University of the Arts London.

2+2

The 2 + 2 exhibition from the Pallas University of Applied Sciences shows a selection of 2020 graduation works in the field of design. The works completed and submitted during a state-wide emergency situation were exceptional and approached design from several sides. There was work on material that begged for a new approach. There was a client who needed a more beautiful solution for a functional chair. There were several works on the design process itself that needed a new source of inspiration. The end result is as simple and logical as 2 + 2, which had to be done in a situation where 2 + 2 was not easy at all.

STUDENT ARTWORK EXHIBITION

Crafting Organic Waste For Fashion

Riina Õun is a leather accessories designer, researcher and a recent graduate of MA Material Futures at Central Saint Martins, UAL in London. She is exploring how waste Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY) generated from the kombucha drink industry can be re-processed into a new, more sustainable, vegan, leather-like material. Various possibilities of how craft has to adapt to working with the material are explored within a collection of handbags. The result is a fully commercial, market-ready product that I can create in large quantities as a viable alternative for the fashion industry.

People are calling for a green revolution. The environment has become a security risk, sustainability a political campaign. Cities are competing for the title of Green Capital, and the European Union is introducing new directives. Climate neutrality is conjunction. The circular economy is a buzzword.

Do we know what that means in our rudimentary everyday life? The exhibition in front of you shows the complexity of the story – the attempt to stop the unstoppably producing textile industry. So that the garbage won't bury us. We want you to ponder on the possibility of a revolution.

The raw material is waste, which according to regulations can no longer go to landfills from 2025. In the European Union, a total of 25% of used clothing is collected. Only 1% is recycled.

But we can recycle a lot more. It is possible if we use every resource available, including our fellow citizens who might go unnoticed.

Recycling art in front of you has been made by female prisoners from Tallinn Prison and people with special needs from the Welfare Institution. People we've left out of the discussion. They deserve a creative voice – we are destroying our planet at their and their children's expense as well.

The exhibition visitor will first receive a tutorial on how to make an apron themselves. And then comes the moment of truth.

The exhibition talks about using the valuable upcycling method and how textile waste becomes a product again through a circular design.

Will you put your worn jeans in the trash again next time?

17.09.2020

17.09.2020
CONFERENCE "Design For Need"
Thu, 17.09. 10:00-15:00

@ Põhjala tehas, Marati 5, 11713, Tallinn

Design for need in times of climate crisis should focus on objects and services able to play a positive part in solving the issue; which would make our environment safer and more enjoyable to live in. Special attention should be given for example to highly functional objects and health protecting, time-saving services. Yet, much of the current design is reduced to plain aesthetics or even glamour. Indeed, beauty and form should be integral to a well-functioning product, however, and above all, design should be based on people’s and societal primary needs.

In the first part of this conference we will hear talks from awarded Finnish designer Ville Kokkonen and renowned Italian industrial design and journalist Ubaldo Spina. David Kusuma, the president of World Design Organization (WDO), will lead the day, introducing the newly launched Mars project with NASA. Estonia will be represented by the engineering lead at Transferwise, Alvar Lumberg, and the Head of Product Design at EKA, Maarja Mõtus, who will explain about the changes taking place in design education and how much the crisis has affected students.

The second part of the conference will focus more thoroughly on design education. It seeks to find an answer to what type of designer is needed as Europe moves towards a climate-neutral circular economy? Practitioners, researchers and lecturers from UAL (University of the Arts London, UK), Polimi (Politécnico di Milano, Italy), DSKD (Designskolen Kolding, Denmark), and EKA (the Estonian Academy of Arts) have come together through an Erasmus+ project called the FashionSEEDS to rethink and improve the design education in the light of the challenges posed by climate change. A keynote speech from Pirjo Kääriäinen, from Aalto University, on collaboration and interdisciplinarity will open the afternoon section, followed by a series of short talks on Fashion Design Education for Sustainability. A panel discussion with international academy and industry representatives, led by Piret Puppart concludes the insights of the day on how to make design education sustainable.

PART 2
FashionSEEDS
"Design-Led Education for Sustainability"

The event, organised by the Estonian Academy of Arts, presents the first results of the FashionSEEDS project to the industry, design professionals and educators.

FashionSEEDS - Fashion Societal, Economic & Environmental Design-led Sustainability - is a project conducted by world-leading institutions in Fashion Education spanning over the course of three years. It seeks to develop a Design-led Framework for Fashion Design Education in Sustainability able to impact transformational changes in the Fashion System in response to the fashion industry’s severe damage to our environment. What skills does a designer need in a new, challenging time for Europe to move towards a climate-friendly circular economy? Partners from UAL (UK), Polimi (Italy), DSKD (Denmark) and EKA (Estonia) will expand the topic to rethink and improve design education in the light of the challenges posed by climate change, social wellbeing, cultural engagement and new economic models. The event will deliver the findings of the Benchmarking Report and the Framework Document for Design-led Sustainability Education, as well as give initial insights to possible sustainability teaching materials as part of the emerging learning resource repository enabling educators to adapt and apply the framework to a range of Higher Education Institutions.

Clothing Design Show D_O_M – DESIGN IS IN FASHION
Thu, 17.09. at 19.00

@ Põhjala tehas, Marati 5, 11713, Tallinn

During Tallinn Design Festival an exceptional event of presenting clothing design D_O_M – DESIGN IS IN FASHION takes place. The audience will be part of a spectacular show that opens up brand concepts.

Through attractive and conceptual show D_O_M there are presented clothes that are worked through in the same manner as design products generally. Garment, the closest layer to our body, determine the health, freedom of movement, safety, general wellbeing of a person. Estonian designers always seek for the best innovations and strive for quality in every aspect. Designed apparel is something that lasts, is worth to repair and devise.

CRYSTAL RABBIT-
is a contemporary undergarment brand created to fill the gap in the lingerie market that catered to classical feminine aesthetics only. Crystal Rabbit celebrates the form and the magic of the body with high-impact minimal design. The garments are meant to be combined with everyday wear, layered over and under, to blur the boundaries of showing skin and hiding behind covers.

All items are made with materials sourced locally or as close as possible from Europe and are designed, cut, sewn and wrapped by designer Kristel Jänes in her studio in Tallinn, Estonia.

The products work on the body as a second skin or layer. And the body is like an Ancient Greece sculpture in the 21st century. These are the undergarments that break the classic expectations and flow abstractly around the human body.

Many thanks to Anu Tera and Uuskasutuskeskus.

MEKOOME-  the founder and designer of the Mekoome knitwear brand, has acquired an architectural education. However, he began to apply her knowledge not in the construction of houses, but in the construction of knitwear. Larissa digitally creates graphic landscapes and transforms them into knit patterns. The pixel pattern of each sweater, hat or neck describes a specific typology of the urban environment. And this architecture in the urban space seems to be transferred to ourselves, into our own clothing.

The patterns of Mekoome knits carry the charm of geometry and the warmth of high-quality wool in everyday life. The design of the brand's items is modern, artistic and clean in style. This is how two passions come together - architecture and weaving.

ALMA-  was the name of the great-grandmother of Anete Pedaru. Four generations of women have all contributed to creating the brand Alma with meaningful background and nostalgia. Anete has always been fascinated with bringing something old, beautiful, and timeless back to life. Through clothing, it is possible to revive Alma’s love, ethics, and attitude towards dressing up. For Alma, it was very important that the clothing was well made and could last for a long time. Now with the brand Alma, it is their task to continue providing these qualities through the clothing.

The brand Alma will always make classical pieces that can fit every woman’s closet. Their form has a broad line and in its own way is sculptural, even architectural. Alma's style is timeless, lasting longer than the seasons, and the clothes can be comfortably combined with the existing wardrobe as well as with each subsequent Alma collection. The brand's styles will last a lifetime, are not disposable and don’t become obsolete with the changing of the seasons. May the beauty last longer than the seasons.

Estonian Design House-  is a platform created in 2010 by the Estonian Designers' Union (EDL). EDM's mission is to introduce and commercialize the work of designers through various sales channels at home and abroad.

EDL's mission, in turn, is to introduce Estonia as a country with rising design potential and to build a reputation both locally as well as around the world.

The performance at the D_O_M brings together a collage of exciting newcomers and contemporary menus that local and foreign audiences have happily acquired in their homes. Not only clothes can be seen on the stage, but also chairs, clocks and much more.

Over a hundred designers and design brands will occupy the hall of Noblessner Shipyard. In addition to a pleasing experience, it is a great opportunity to learn about the designers and the stories behind the products and purchase some of the best design with special prices.
